Caterpillar to Buy 3i-Backed MWM Significantly Expanding Customer Options for Sustainable Power Generation Solution
PEORIA, Ill. / LONDON, U.K. – Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) has signed an agreement to acquire MWM Holding GmbH (“MWM” or the “Company”) from 3i and funds managed by 3i. Headquartered in Mannheim, Germany, MWM is a leading global supplier of highly sustainable alternative engines.
With the acquisition of MWM, Caterpillar will significantly expand customer options for sustainable power generation solutions. The total transaction value amounts to €580 million (approximately $810 million) and will be paid in cash. MWM, which stands for Motoren-Werke Mannheim, can draw on more than 135 years of experience in the development and optimization of combustion engines for natural gas, special gases and diesel.
“MWM is recognized for its leading technology and product strength, particularly for its highly efficient range of engines, combined heat and power and trigeneration solutions capable of operating on a wide range of gaseous fuels including natural gas,
biogas, mine gas and industrial waste gas,” said Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman. “This is a natural complement to Caterpillar’s existing diesel and gas power generation business and demonstrates our commitment to continued investment in sustainable products and industries,” Oberhelman added.
“We are very pleased about the development MWM experienced over the last three years. In close collaboration with the MWM management and its employees, we developed and implemented a broad number of strategic and operational improvement initiatives. We also made significant investments in the Company’s production facilities, research and development platform and distribution network. Today, MWM has a highly skilled and motivated workforce, best-in-class products as well as a very efficient sales organization and production facilities,” said Peter Wirtz, partner and managing director of 3i Germany. “Beyond our accomplished mission of transforming MWM’s positioning, we strongly believe in the long-term success of the Company under Caterpillar’s ownership,” Wirtz continued.
Following the repositioning of MWM over the three years since 3i’s investment in the company, 3i will recognize an internal rate of return in excess of 25 percent and generate a 2.2x return on its investment.
“We highly appreciate 3i’s support and believe that Caterpillar provides the best prospects for the next step of our development, given its worldwide network which will open up new distribution and growth opportunities to us,” said Peter Grosch, chairman of
MWM. MWM will become part of Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division (EPD), which supplies natural gas and diesel generator sets and integrated power systems involved in the generation, control and supply of electricity. EPD operates in more than 50 locations around the world.
The integration of MWM will result in important synergies leveraging the two companies’ existing product ranges, advanced engine technologies, research and development resources, manufacturing, distribution and customer support capabilities. “The gas engines industry is a great fit for Caterpillar’s energy and electric power systems business. Together with the two companies’ premium products, technology and global distribution network, our comprehensive offerings will deliver sustainable power system solutions for our global customers,” said Bill Rohner, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for Electric Power.
The acquisition is expected to close in the coming months, pending final regulatory approvals.

Caterpillar Introduces Advanced EMCP 4 Controller for Generator Sets
PEORIA, IL — Caterpillar Inc. announced today the introduction of its latest generator set controller – the EMCP 4. An evolution of previous EMCP 3 controller models, the state-of-the-art EMCP 4 offers several new features and scalable control platforms. The EMCP 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 provide a wide range of benefits designed to suit many different application needs.
The EMCP 4.1 is the entry level controller, offering basic engine and generator monitoring and protection. With the addition of over/under voltage and over/under frequency protection, it is designed to provide complete control, monitoring and protection for standby and prime power applications.
The EMCP 4.2 builds on the features of the EMCP 4.1 controller, offering expanded engine and generator protection and monitoring. Additional generator metering includes kW, kVA and kWh. Flexibility is also increased with the addition of a Modbus RTU communication port, remote annunciator modules and expansion I/O modules to allow the EMCP 4 system to be configured to meet site specific design requirements. With the additional monitoring and expansion modules available, the EMPC 4.2 is designed to provide control and protection for critical installations, such as NFPA 110 Level 1 applications.
Incorporating all of the features of the EMPC 4.2 – including generator metering, Modbus RTU communications and the ability to interface with optional modules – the EMCP 4.3 further expands the EMCP 4 line with the addition of a large 5.5-inch graphical display and additional context specific navigation keys. Industry leading ±0.25 percent metering accuracy provides a precise view of generator operation. With the addition of a Modbus TCP port, the EMCP 4.3 controller can be easily integrated into complex systems requiring more advanced generator set monitoring.
Building on the EMCP 4.3 platform, the EMCP 4.4 introduces on package paralleling controls for Cat® generator sets. This provides a robust set of advanced features to support most system installations. Standard on the EMCP 4.4 are all functions typically required for paralleling. This includes load shed/load add to automatically cycle load based on the number of generator sets online, and load sense/load demand to vary the number of generator sets on line based on the total site load to ensure optimal use of the units.
Annunciator modules are available to provide local and/or remote annunciation of generator set operating status, such as a low oil pressure or high coolant temperature alarms. Each annunciator module can annunciate 16 different parameters, and can be fully customized to meet a customer’s requirements.
A range of optional modules is available to further increase the flexibility of the EMCP 4 control system. RTD and thermocouple modules can be added to provide detailed engine and generator temperature monitoring and protection. If additional inputs or outputs are required, an optional input/output module can be added.

Caterpillar Announces Introduction of XQ800 725 ekW Mobile Generator Set – Meets Tier 4 Interim Emission Standards
PEORIA, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today announces the introduction of its 725 ekW mobile diesel generator set meeting Tier 4 Interim emission standards. This power module is rated for prime operation at 725 ekW (480/277 V and 240/139 V) and 672 ekW (208/120 V) and can easily be configured for 50 Hz operation, rated at 750 kVA (400 V). Powered by the fuel-efficient Cat® C27 ACERT® engine, the XQ800 is sold and rented exclusively through Cat dealers.
Equipped with the new EMCP 4.4 control panel, the XQ800 features a user-friendly interface and automatic generator set paralleling. A principle advantage of the control system is the auto- configuration of key performance parameters when frequency and/or voltage changes are required. The EMCP 4.4, ADEM™ A4 and Cat Digital Voltage Regulator (CDVR) sense changes and adjust the parameters for optimum performance. Providing greater flexibility when moving between multiple job sites with differing frequency and voltage needs, the auto-configuration capability eliminates the time required when reprogramming units and potential errors.
The XQ800 power module is ideal for utility paralleling applications as it offers power metering, protective relaying, and engine and generator control monitoring. The optional Utility Multifunction Relay (UMR) provides the protection often required by utilities when paralleling with a utility source.
To expedite installation after delivery, redesigned connection points provide better access and cable spacing between the main load bus terminals. Automatic changeover between shore power and generator set power for all on-board systems additionally speeds set-up. The ladder and rail storage is integrated into the chassis on this rental unit – a design improvement affecting access and handling.
From the operation perspective, the XQ800 mobile generator set accepts 100 percent rated load in one step per NFPA 110 and meets ISO 8528-5 transient response. This unit provides 110 percent spill containment of onboard engine fluids.

Caterpillar Announces First Mid-Range Tier 4 Interim Certified Diesel Generator Set – 500 ekW Package Powered by the C15 Engine
PEORIA, IL — Caterpillar Inc. announced today the introduction of its first mid-range generator set meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. Designed for standby, prime and load management applications, it offers the latest in engine design technology. Powered by the Cat® C15 engine, the ratings for this 60 Hz package are 500 ekW (Standby) and 455 ekW (Prime). Building on the attributes of the C15 diesel generator set with ACERT™ Technology, this package offers highly competitive service intervals, fuel consumption rates and power density. This is the first available in the Tier 4 Interim certified series of diesel generator sets – additional product announcements will follow in the coming months.
Utilizing an electronically controlled air management system, the advanced emissions control on the engine acts to lower combustion temperature, achieving decreased NOx output. Thus the EPA regulated levels are met without the need for aftertreatment. By relying on engine technology alone, customers benefit from the most cost-effective solution, which minimizes impact on installation size, operating practices and maintenance complexity.
The C15 Tier 4 Interim certified generator set package will be the first to offer Caterpillar’s latest generator set controller – the EMCP 4. An evolution of previous EMCP 3 models, the state-of-the-art EMCP 4 delivers a more intuitive, user-friendly interface/navigation and a scalable platform with added flexibility to precisely match customer power requirements. It offers greater configuration options to meet unique installation requirements (i.e., improved communication with SCADA systems – Modbus, RS-485 and Ethernet).
Additional engine features include an ADEM™ A4 controller and MEUI fuel system. Its durable design provides added reliability, consistent performance and excellent fuel economy.
The generator set offers an Air-To-Air After Cooler (ATAAC) cooling system, multiple control panel and power connection locations, and enhanced package-mounted circuit breaker options. The self-excited, random-wound generator provides a UL 1446 recognized Class H insulation system. It features IP23 protection, a VR6 voltage regulator with load adjustment and 2/3 pitch stator winding.
Optional weather protective and sound-attenuated enclosures are available on the new Tier 4 Interim package. To support the new line of generator sets, Cat dealers and technicians will be factory trained in emissions technology.
